How to spend a perfect 48 hours in Pittsburgh

Did you know that Pittsburgh has 446 bridges? It’s no wonder it’s cutie nickname is “The City of Bridges.” But seriously this is probably my favorite thing about it!

I am hoping to go back again in the summer, and spend more time exploring some of these bridges and taking some fun pics because who doesn’t love an aesthetic yellow bridge backdrop??

Anyway, two of my teacher girlies and I decided to explore the city for the weekend, during what felt like the coldest weekend in history – you’d think we were used to the cold being from Northeast Ohio but you never really get used to negative temperatures :’)

We stayed in an airbnb downtown on Penn Ave, with so many walkable restaurants, bars, and activities. If it weren’t so cold, we could have walked even more, but we decided to uber to some of the further out places, because we could only be outside for so long!

Here are some of the highlights from the trip, with a free bucket list download at the end, to save for your next Pittsburgh trip!

Monongahela Incline

We accidentally rode the Duquesne Incline on this trip, but in my opinion, the Monongahela Incline has a much better view and more activities once you’ve gone up. Be sure to bring cash for this little adventure, and check out Gordo’s Tacos and Tequila on Shiloh Street, after enjoying the beautiful view.

Randyland

This frigid stop was quite windy, so it didn’t last long, but Randyland is always a must-see in Pittsburgh. Located in the Allegheny neighborhood, you could also check out the Children’s Museum, Andy Warhol Art Museum, Mattress Factory and many other noteworthy stops. This neighborhood alone could be a day trip!

The Eagle

The Eagle was a short walk from our airbnb and made for the perfect drinks and dinner destination. The first night, we shared a very sweet pitcher of blackberry lemonade while boldly (and embarrassingly) cheering on the Browns in the playoffs… and watching them get destroyed. Then we returned the second night for dinner. The spicy chicken dip, fried chicken sandwich, and lemon thyme ranch were amazing. Highly recommend The Eagle as a delicious affordable dinner option.

Nicky’s Thai Kitchen

Nicky’s gives massive portions for a great price. We devoured the chicken egg rolls, sweet and sour chicken, and Phad See Eaw. The cocktails also looked delicious. Will definitely return on the next trip!

Tequila Cowboy

If you love dancing to typical club jams, this is your place – however, the crowd is very young, as it seemed to be a main hub for college students in the area.

Howl at the Moon

If you love live music and a more eclectic, older crowd, this is your place. We absolutely loved the band and couldn’t believe they played almost entirely crowd requests, while constantly switching up their instruments. Crazy talent! Also the bathroom experience here is 11/10.

Pamela’s Diner – Strip District

After a late night out, this meal was exactly what we needed. With affordable prices and huge portions, this is the perfect brunch spot to start your day. Extremely popular, as evident by the constant line, but you never have to wait long, as they efficiently turn over tables and get you eating as soon as possible. We loved their breakfast sandwiches, belgian waffle, and famous Lyonnaise potatoes – mashed homestyle potatoes with a slightly crispy edge.

Strip District Stops

  • De Fer Coffee Shop: Delicious hot cocoa
  • City Grows plant shop
  • Posman Book shop and ice cream
  • City Winery

Museum of Illusions

Probably the coolest thing we did on the trip. A huge museum dedicated to tricking your mind into seeing things that aren’t real. So many cool photo ops and #mindblowing moments. The best part? This museum is a chain and there are 24 locations in North America, with 4 more coming soon. To my Cleveland pals, our location is coming soon! Check it out here.

Bridges and Bourbon Cocktail Bar

We tried the Butterfly Effect and Scarecrow cocktails and were blown away by the creativity and originality of the drinks and atmosphere. Would definitely go again to try another crazy drink!

Milkshake Factory

No trip is complete without ice cream so what better place than a giant milkshake from the Milkshake Factory? We walked in the freezing cold to get them and it was absolutely worth it!

We ended the trip with a wholesome night in, watching Wine Country at the airbnb with our yummy milkshakes. I can’t wait to go back in the warmer months, but until then, seeya later Pittsburgh!

Thank YOU for the recommendation! Such a lovely little diner, with wonderful food. I’m hoping to go back in the summer because the cold weather was the only downside!
